Douglass in the Valley

Frederick Douglass' autobiography is a great starter for anyone keen on understanding African American history.Book titles written by activists of color often have the words "written by himself" or "written by herself". Anti-abolitionists reasoned that they were intellectually superior and the titles were framed to prove otherwise. All highly relevant as the Land of the Free is under scrutiny for becoming less fair for some.

Closer home, there were two recent things that made me think of inclusiveness in Silicon Valley. The first was when I offered to advice to a 20-something woman who majored in computer science and is passionate about gaming and design, but had found it hard to find a job as a programmer.Cindy(not her real name) belongs to an underrepresented community. Yet,she could be luckier than many. The second were the deaths of Bill Campbell and Prince.I couldn't help but wonder what the Valley was doing to provide mentoring and support to those who rarely make headlines. Prince did much through his non-profit #YesWeCode . He was truly a King. We have a long way to go before the world is truly flat.

Pulling the cordless cord

Hello World.I just pulled the cord on Netflix. I decided there were too many things I wanted to do that could gain from fewer binge views of Daredevil. For example, reading Brad Feld's awesome blog on being and staying real while working in and with technology. His last post inspired me to binge on some really old Isaac Asimov magazine issues instead. Here's to the future hidden in the past!
